Originally known as "The Junction", Cromwell is found halfway in between Queenstown and Wanaka, at the confluence of the Clutha and Kawarau Rivers.

Located 50kms from Wanaka and 60kms from Queenstown, on highway 6, Cromwell is the service town for local farmers, fruit growers and vineyards. The particularly dry climate here is ideal for growing stone fruits and grapes, making Cromwell and the Central Otago district most reputable for its production of red wine.

The man-made Lake Dunstan surrounds much of the town, making Cromwell a popular spot for Waterskiers and Wakeboarders, but the Highlands Motorsport Park is Cromwell’s latest attraction.

Nearby settlements include Bannockburn, Clyde and Tarras, with Alexandra a little further north.
