Located in Arrowtown, right on the main high street, the Lakes District Museum and Gallery is a gold mine of history, with their innovative displays, ever-changing historical and art exhibitions.
The museum doubles as the Arrowtown information centre, assisting with booking acitivites and accommodation for the whole region. The entrance floor holds a special exhibition gallery hosting a variety of quality art and historical exhibitions.
The museum itself is as popular with locals as it is with visitors. It has a strong hands-on focus, presenting an authentic picture of early Maori life and the harsh pioneering days of the European settlers and goldminers, through working displays covering two floors and incorporating three historic buildings. The lower level is built on the original Arrowtown high street itself, and has been re-constructed to simulate its previous surroundings.
