Arrowtown

You’ll be enchanted by Historic Arrowtown; a quaint and picturesque town, steeped in history, and a scenic 20 minute drive from Queenstown.

Arrowtown is charming and quirky – a delightful gold rush village nestled below the beautiful peaks that surround the sparkling Arrow River.

The Arrow River was a rich source of gold in the late 1800s, putting Arrowtown on the map for gold miners around the world. The large variety of emigrant diggers that made their way here created Arrowtown’s multicultural society today. The many original 19th century cottages and historic wooden buildings, show the town’s determination to preserve their past.

Contrasting to Queenstown, Arrowtown offers an ambiance and peacefulness not found elsewhere in the region. The most beautiful time of year to visit is widely considered to be Autumn. The golden colours of the Autumn leaves enrich the town’s picturesque landscape and tranquil vibe.

The heart of its history is Buckingham Street, a procession of small-town heritage buildings that stretch into a tree-lined avenue of tiny miner’s cottages. The buildings in this lovely precinct house shops, galleries, bars, and restaurants – many classy, most individual, and not part of international chains. It is a wonderful place to browse, enjoying the dining, the shopping, and soaking up Arrowtown’s lively heritage.

This alpine setting hosts the picturesque Arrowtown trails, a cluster of attractive walking and cycling tracks, many suiting beginners. The remains of the separate Chinese miners’ village lie by the river. Varied activities include three splendid golf courses, one at our beautiful Millbrook resort.

Buckingham Street is also home to the Lakes District Museum, with its memorable exhibition of life in a goldfields town. This is also the Information Centre, and a first-stop for maps and guidance.

Arrowtown is recognised as the walking and biking centre of the Wakatipu and the many walking trails and cycle tracks of the area either start or finish in the town. Talk to the staff at the museum Information Centre for maps and local information.

As a stop overnight or the base for your week-long holiday, the delightful Arrowtown has varied accommodation choices. Expect a friendly welcome here!
